Offered is an original 1857 Stock Certificate for “The Osakis Company” - for the Town of Osakis, Minnesota. The share is an ornately designed document, suitable for framing. It was somewhat common in the 19th century for cities in the burgeoning west to incorporate and sell stock to try to secure enough capital for the town to grow. the funds were essentially bonds, and would eventually be cashed in by the holder. Accompanying is a 20th century reprint of the September 1883 issue of The Golden Egg periodical which contains an article about Osakis. The certificate measures 11 ½ x 8 inches and presents with period fold lines, some small stains. Excellent to Mint condition.
