Legendary explorer Admiral Richard E. Byrd has neatly signed on the title page of the offered first edition of his 1930 book Little America. The book is an official account of his aerial exploration in the Antarctic and his flight to the South Pole. Though this is a first edition from 1930, the spelling of Byrd's mother's name, "Eleanor," was corrected in this second issue. Byrd was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, by President Calvin Coolidge, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. Byrd claimed that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. His claim to have reached the North Pole is disputed. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Beckett Authentic. The book measures 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches and presents with mild water damage to the cover and some separation on the inner cover binding. Excellent condition.
