The offered RIAA Gold Record Award was for the Queen single “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was released on October 13, 1975 and certified on June 3, 1976. Queen fought tooth and nail with their label, Elektra Records, to release 5 minute and 55 second long progressive rock single, finally resorting to sneaking a reel to reel copy of the song to a UK DJ to play on the air. The song eventually leaked to the U.S. Airwaves, as well, and after fans were clamoring on both sides of the Atlantic for the single that didn't exist, Elektra relented. The song spent nine weeks at the top of the UK charts. Queen's determination to create music guided only by their own artisic sentiments and inspirations produced “Bohemian Rhapsody” and an entire catalog of some of the most original and creative work in rock and roll history. While the song's meaning will always be interpreted by each new generation, its originality stands as a tribute to the unique artisitic character of Freddie Mecury himself and the band. The plaque on the award reads: “Presented to Freddie Mercury to Commemorate the Sale of More Than One Million Copies of the Elektra Records Single Record 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'” The award measures 13 x 17 inches and presents with only very minor wear to the wooden frame.
