The offered RIAA Gold Record Award is for the Queen single “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” which was released in the U.S. on December 7, 1979. The song spent four weeks at #1 on the U.S. Charts, and was certified Gold on May 12, 1980. Freddie Mercury wrote the song as a tribute to Elvis Presley and claimed that wrtiting the song “took me five or ten minutes. I did that on the guitar, which I can't play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It's a good discipline because I simply had to write within a small framework. I couldn't work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think.” The plaque on the award reads: “Presented to Freddie Mercury to Commemorate the Sale of More Than One Million Copies of the Elektra Records Single Record 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love.'” The period award measures 13 x 17 inches and presents with only very minor wear to the wooden frame. Near Mint condition.
