The offered two-piece suit and complete ensemble with shirt, tie and belt were worn by Robert Redford in his portrayal of "John Gage" in the 1993 film Indecent Proposal. The film tells the story where a married couple's relationship is put into turmoil by a stranger's offer, Redford's character, of a million dollars for the wife to spend the night with him. It was directed by Adrian Lyne and stars Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson. Because of moral murkiness of the plot, the film is still a cultural reference point. Redford played the millionaire who puts forth the "proposal" perfectly, and wears the offered suit in a number of scenes in the film including a pivotal confrontation between him and Harrelson late in the film. The "Cerruti 1881" suit coat and pants both maintain their custom labels that read: "Tailored for Robert Redford / 6/17/92," which aligns with the film's 1992 production period. The custom made "Anto" dress shirt has two "R" tags, for Robert Redford, and a "June 1992" tag in the collar. The shirt's "Anto" label and the tie's "Georgia Armani" label both have handwritten notations. Also included are two inventory tags, most-likely from The Golden Closet. The outfit consists of a tailored two piece suit by Cerruti Couture, custom white dress shirt, a patterned Armani tie, and genuine alligator leather belt. The shirt was custom made for use by Mr. Redford by Anto Shirtmakers of Beverly Hills and is complete with the original tailor's tag sewn into the collar listing the actor's initials "R.R." and the production date "June 1992."
Mr. Redford wore the outfit during the pivotal scene where John Gage and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) are confronted in the rain by a drunk and distraught David Murphy (Woody Harrelson), who has tailed them to a restaurant in a desperate attempt to win back his estranged wife, the suit is concealed beneath the coat. All the garments are in excellent screen worn condition.
The letter is signed by The Golden Closet CEO Breanna Livie--she signs here as "Vice President Eastern Costume Company." Their LOAs are some of the most respected in the world of entertainment wardrobe, costumes and props. Starting in the the late 1940s, her grandfather, Charles James, worked as a costumer for the major studios for over 40 years. After many of the studios disbanded and sold off their costume and wardrobe departments in the 1970s, James and Breanna's father, James Livie, formed Costume Rentals Corporation, one of the first independent movie costume companies. And in 1990, James Livie formed Eastern Costume Company. In 1996, having gained her own extensive experience and familiarity with wardrobe and prop departments through her family, Breanna founded The Golden Closet.
The suit, shirt, tie and belt all exhibit signs of use, but remain in Near Mint condition overall.
