Dick Perez Talks About His Personal Baseball Magazine Collection - An Artist's Inspiration

By and large, my baseball art is characteristically historical and therefore dependent on using vintage photographs. My digital photo collection contains close to 10,000 baseball photos and a few thousand covering other sports. My sources were from hundreds of baseball books and books on other sports, Baseball Hall of Fame files, videos, team files, the internet, card companies, and sports magazines.

The images from the many baseball/sports magazines are the ones I treasure the most. Many of the photos in these publications were reproduced one-time only and therefore never seen again. That is until I used them to create my narratives, poses, action scenes, and portraits. I would extract different segments from different photos to create one image the viewer had never seen before.

My only regret in giving up these magazines is that I didn’t read more published articles. They are vital to American sports history.
