Offered is a fascinating group of production materials employed to create the cover for Elton John's 1972 album Honky Chateau. Presented are an original proof sheet of the front and back cover elements, including portraits of Elton John and the other band members, as well as four camera ready transparencies of the front cover title artwork and song listing for the album's unique flap enclosure. The other piece is a full-page advertisement for the album that could have been for newspaper placement or used as a handbill in record stores. Also included is a copy of the final album sleeve, without the vinyl. The LP's design was rather lavish for the period with its embossed title on the cover, flap enclosure and dramatic photographic portrait of Elton John, which was produced separately and must have had to be adhered to the cover in an extra step in the process. Honky Chateau was a smash hit, and any internal rumblings about the cost of the elaborate LP were quickly forgotten when the album reached number one on the US charts. The front and back cover proof sheet measures 23 x 30 inches, and presents as a wonderful display piece representing what is considered to be one of Elton John's finest records. The materials present with no major defects, but do show signs of handling in a production environment. Excellent to Mint condition overall.
