When Elton John visited Berlin's historic Deutschlandhalle on April 9, 1974, he was basking in the glory of the success of his smash hit record Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, released in late 1973. The offered concert poster can only be described as somehow at once presaging the coming era of disco while also honoring the modernist, Warhol-inspired, nostalgia-co-opting design styles of its own moment. The artist created a 3-dimensional dreamscape of images he imagined had led us to the arrival of the central figure of Elton John, screaming out his songs in a live show, including Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart. German designers were always known for taking wild chances when it came to posters for not only rock concerts but also films. The offered poster, as well as being incredibly hard to find, is the ultimate example of this Teutonic tradition. The venue was originally built for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The poster has been professionally mounted on a heavy-duty particle board with bevelled edges painted black in what must have been for long-term display in a commercial record store, but its origins are unknown. This poster has been reprinted in recent years, but the modern copies are easy to spot for their softer focus and sharper colors. The poster measures 23 x 33 inches and presents mounted on particle board. The poster has areas of paper loss and moderate to heavy wear. Very Good condition on board.
