On September 1, 1976, Gene Barksdale, then Sheriff of Shelby County, presented Elvis with the offered certificate confirming Elvis’ appointment as Honorary Deputy Sheriff. The "State of Tennessee County of Shelby" certificate, bearing the official gold seal with ribbon, was presented to “Elvis Aron Presley” and states in part, “Reposing full trust in your prudence, integrity and ability, I do, by virtue of the power and authority in me vested as Sheriff of Shelby County, Tennessee, hereby commission you an Honorary Deputy Sheriff for Shelby County, Tennessee.” The certificate has the printed calligraphic date and is signed by Sheriff Gene Barksdale. It is said that Elvis was so keenly fascinated by the Sheriff’s role and title that Elvis had previously joked that he would go to any length to achieve it, including running for the post. Gene Barksdale, likely recalling that past quip, acquiesced to Elvis by officially making him honorary deputy Sheriff as confirmed by this appointment certificate. The certificate in its framed display measures 15 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches and presents in well-preserved Near Mint condition.
