On October 18, 1956, Elvis Presley pulled into a Memphis Gulf gas station to have his exhaust checked. Inevitably, several girls noticed him and flocked to the car for autographs. When the owner of the station, Edd Hopper, asked him to move and Presley didn't comply in what Hopper considered a timely fashion, a physical altercation broke out. Hopper got a black eye and purportedly attempted to pull a knife. He, Presley and another gas station employee were all arrested when nearby local police noticed the fracas and put an end to it. The next day, Elvis and the two men all appeared in the Memphis City Courthouse in front of a capacity crowd of Presley's faithful fans. The two other men were fined, but Elvis' charge was dismissed. The offered photo captures one fan, young Miss Mary Anne Lewis, with Elvis in the hallway outside the courtroom. While Elvis appears a bit nervous, or relieved the whole affair is over, Miss Lewis was more than ready to strike a pose for her opportunity to appear in the paper with her idol. And if it weren't for the braces she might have been mistaken for a Hollywood ingénue! The newsroom writing on the reverse includes “girl Presley Layout Inside” and “Elvis Presley & Mary Anne Lewis 10/19/56.” The photo measures 8 x 10 inches. The photo presents with expected newsroom markings and writing on the reverse, some minor toning and edge wear with one small tear, as well as some minor cracking in the gloss finish. Excellent to Mint condition.
