Rockhurst Auctions is proud to offer this wonderful quilt created from vintage t-shirts featuring the work of noted artist, Betty Harper. 100% of the proceeds from the sale benefit The Bridget Chérie Harper Artist Scholarship Fund. The Fund was established to help young artists pursue their dreams and is awarded each year to a high school senior interested in persuing art. Each Scholarship recipient also receives a copy of Bridget's 2015 book, Soul of Ceramics. By establishing this non-profit fund, Bridget's family is honored to be able to continue her passion for giving. As the fund grows, so will the amount of the scholarship that will be offered each year.

In the fall of 2013, Bridget was diagnosed with lung cancer that quickly spread to her brain. She passed away in August of 2015 at the age of 44. During that time period, so many of her friends were there to help in any way possible including financial support, paying bills, getting her to doctor appointments--the list is endless. When she passed, her family decide to take the money in her account and start a scholarship fund to help other artists hopefully achieve their goals. Bridget's adult life was spent helping others and changing their lives for the better.

Bridget's mother, Betty Harper, created the art featured on the quilt. Her work has made her a favorite among Elvis Presley fans, and Betty has become a bit of an institution during Elvis Week and Elvis' Birthday Celebration. She and her artwork can be found in The Guest House Gift Shop during the festivities--just look for startling paintings of Elvis and her signature cowboy hat! The vintage Betty Harper Elvis t-shirts were assembled into this quilt by Elvis fan Alysia Bailey. The quilt measures 40 x 49 1/2 inches.

Bridget Chérie Harper

Bridget Chérie Harper, daughter of noted Elvis artist Betty Harper, left her childhood home in Tennessee and attended Arizona State University. Following one elective ceramics class, the young artist discovered a natural talent and love for ceramics and quickly switched her major.

While traveling in Italy, her embryonic interest in classical sculpture matured. Harper drew on her appreciation for the ancient, broken figures of classical sculpture as inspiration for the forms her sculptures would take. A basket filled with vials of china paints, purchased at an antique mall, informed Harper’s surface design. Her lush, detailed paintings, often depicting the human form and botanical or zoological images, have broad meanings in themselves, and also showcase the elegance of the sculptural form.

After college, Bridget continued her education independently in Thailand and Italy. Her work was exhibited all over Arizona, in California, Chicago, Philadelphia, Tulsa, as well as Beijing and in Vallauris, France.

From 1998 until her passing, she served as program coordinator for ceramics for the City of Tempe Cultural Services Division. In that capacity, she built what has been described as one of the most sophisticated community arts studios in Arizona. Bridget cultivated a community of artists and friends in and around her home studio and the Cultural Services Division studio. A friend and former co-worker explained, “Bridget created a community at the art center…. She was the force that brought together the ceramic family for all of us to enjoy and be part of…. Being around Bridget makes you want to pursue your dreams.”

It's that spirit that created The Bridget Chérie Harper Artist Scholarship Fund.
