Offered is an incredible 1931 Tour of Japan Baseball Team Oversized Team Photo. This 17-game, two-month trip had a roster that was much more impressive than the previous tours, featuring future Hall-of-Famers Lefty Grove, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Cochrane, Rabbit Maranville, Al Simmons, George “High Pockets” Kelly, and Frankie Frisch. In the offered photo, the team is with more than a dozen Japanese businessmen, perhaps executives of the nascent Japanese pro baseball league. The U.S. players pictured are as follows: (back row, left to right): French, Cochrane, O’Doul, Lieb, Grove, Hunter, Cunningham, Oliver, Kelly, Gehrig. (front row, left to right): Kamm, Maranville, Frisch, Ruel, Simmons, Shinners, Knowles. The photo measures 21 1/2 x 17 3/4 inches and presents mounted on matte board and with several areas of cracking, scrapes, minor paper loss toning. Excellent condition.
