The offered MCA Records poster was shipped to record stores to promote Elton John's 1973 LP Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. The poster's design and typography harken back to classic Hollywood of the 1930s, with Elton in classic top hat and tails with a cane. All band members are listed, including Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and "Lyrics by Bernie Taupin." This poster would be the perfect compliment to the impressive standee also being offered in this auction. The two would create quite an impressive pairing.
Don't Shoot Me was recorded during a return trip to the French castle where the band had recorded Honky Chateau in 1972, and the mystical setting once again worked its magic, as they cranked out 12 songs in four days. This included the album's big hits "Crocodile Rock and "Daniel." The album's title is a reference to a quip Elton made to Groucho Marx when they met in 1972.
The poster measures 21 3/4 x 35 inches and presents many pinholes, scratches, areas of paper loss on the edges and several small tears. There is some wear along the original factory folds. All that said, the color is excellent and the central image still presents with great contrast. Excellent condition.
