Offered is a "Jeff's Last Shift" lithograph by artist Joseph E. Baker. It's one of the less outlandish variations on the popular theme of Jefferson Davis's capture by Union soldiers. In a wooded setting Davis, wearing a bonnet and dress and wielding a Bowie knife, tries unsuccessfully to flee from three armed Union soldiers. One soldier grabs Davis's arm, while the others point their weapons at him. A woman, possibly Davis's wife, raises her hands in alarm. The quotation at bottom, attributed to Mrs. Davis, and certainly included as a little insult to the injury, reads: "The men had better not provoke the President as he might hurt some of 'em." The lithograph was issued in 1865 from Bufford's Print Publishing House of Boston. The lithograph measures 17 ½ x 13 inches and has been mounted on linen. Apparent Near Mint.
