“Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay” was released on January 8, 1968, less than a month after the tragic death of Otis Redding. Redding had written portions of the song over the course of 1967, scribbling lines now and then as he toured and traveled during the year. When he met with producer, and guitarist for Booker T & the MGs, Steve Cropper at Stax studios in Memphis in late November, the two finished the song's lyrics together. Cropper recounts that Otis was in San Francisco staying on a houseboat in the Summer of 1967 when the initial inspiration came to him. Cropper filled out the narrative of the song with details about Redding himself, something Redding rarely did in his own writing, and it created the masterpiece we know today. Redding put his final overdubs on the recording on December 7, just three days before he died, and Cropper later mixed the song and added the seagulls and ocean sound effects as Redding had wanted. The song was the first posthumous single to go to #1, and it was certified gold by the RIAA on March 11, 1968. the plaque on the award reads: “Presented to Otis Redding to Commemorate the Sale of More Than One Million Copies of the Volt Records Pop Single Record '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay.'” The early white linen matte award measures 13 x 17 inches and presents with only very minor wear to the wooden frame and very little toning to the white linen matte. Near Mint to Mint condition.
