Prior to the RIAA starting to issue certified Gold Record Awards to recording artists in 1958, record labels regularly issued “in-house” awards to their artists. And no label awards looked more regal than those issued by RCA, as evidenced by the offered Gold Record Award for Elvis Presley's 1957 single “Jailhouse Rock,” with its deep green velvet background, gold frame and engraved silver plaque. The award's plaque reads “To Col. Tom Parker in Appreciation of His Contribution Toward Making 'Jailhouse Rock' A Million Seller 1957.” “Jailhouse Rock” was a huge hit for Elvis, and after its release on September 24, 1957, it topped the U.S. And U.K. charts for weeks on end—it was the first song to ever debut at #1 on the U.K. charts. The song was recorded among other tracks for the film Jailhouse Rock on April 30, 1957 at Radio Recorders Hollywood Studios. It was common for managers, producers and other artists to be given awards for hit songs and records, and Colonel Tom Parker ALWAYS received his own copies of awards for Elvis' hits. The offered example was most-likely restored at the behest of Colonel Parker during the 1970s, as its design details and framing differ slightly from those hailing from the 1950s. Based on other early examples seen in the marketplace, the Colonel didn't always take good care of the awards, and it is unsurprising that they may have needed refurbishing by the 1970s! The award measures 16 1/8 by 14 1/8 inches and presents with only minor wear and scuffing to the painted frame. Near Mint condition.
