The offered letter was handwritten and signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes on November 26, 1885, and it was sent from his estate "Spiegel Grove" in Fremont, Ohio. The letter is a response from Hayes accepting an honorary membership in an outdoor club of the period. After his 1877-1881 Presidency, Hayes became an advocate for educational charities and federal education subsidies for all children. He believed education was the best way to heal the rifts in American society and allow people to improve themselves.
"Spiegel" is the German and Dutch word for mirror. The traditional story is that the estate was named by Hayes' uncle Sardis Birchard, who first built it for his own residence. He named it for the reflective pools of water that collected on the property after a rain shower.
Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Beckett Authentic. The letter measures 5 ½ x 8 ½ inches and presents with toning, some mild stains and remnants of mailing folds. Excellent condition.
