Offered is an RIAA Gold Record Award for The Who's 1971 LP Who's Next. The album was an immediate success when it was released, and it has since been viewed by many critics as the Who's best album and one of the greatest albums of all time. Who's Next was originally developed as a rock opera follow up to Tommy, but was eventually released as a studio album. They made prominent use of synthesizer on the album, particularly on "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Baba O'Riley", which were both released as singles. The album was b The record was released on August 14, 1971, and certified gold by the RIAA on August 16, 1971. This is an early "white linen matte" version of the awards produced in the period. The plaque reads: “Presented to PETE TOWNSHEND to Commemorate the Sale of More Than One Million Dollars Worth of the Decca Records Long-Playing Record Album 'WHO'S NEXT.'” The award measures 18 x 21 ½ inches and presents with mild scuffs and scratches to the wooden frame.
