The offered letter is a rare glimpse into the personal life of famed FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and his longtime companion FBI Associate Director Clyde Tolson. The letter is typed on Hoover's official FBI executive letterhead, dated December 31, 1964, and marked "PERSONAL." It is addressed to "Mrs. Maybelle MacLean, Gulfstream Hotel" in Miami Beach, Florida, and it reads "I did not want the occasion to pass without expressing my appreciate for the fine services you rendered Mr. Tolson and me during our visit to Miami Beach. Mr. Tolson and I want to thank you for making our stay more comfortable. Sincerely, J. Edgar Hoover." Hoover and Tolson worked together at the Bureau for decades, and often spent holidays and vacations together. The letter represents an unusual direct reference by Hoover to the private time spent with Tolson. Accompanied by a COA from Beckett Authentic. The display measures 15 x 12 inches and features two photos of Hoover and Tolson together. The letter measures 7 x 9 inches and presents with one small stain. Excellent condition.
