Offered is a wonderful original oil painting of Elvis Presley by English artist George Underwood. The privately commissioned artwork, oil paint on masonite, portrays Elvis Presley in 1957 wearing his iconic gold lamé stage outfit. Elvis only wore the outfit a few times, but the image is one of the most iconic looks from those early years of his seminal rock and roll career. Underwood captured Elvis' understated yet enduring confidence in the offered portrait. Underwood signed in the lower left. The painting was featured on the acknowledments spread of the 1987 Roger G. Taylor book Elvis in Art. Underwood is known for creating album covers for such artists as T. Rex ( Futuristic Dragon, My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows), The Fixx ( Phantoms, Reach the Beach, Beautiful Friction and Calm Animals), Procol Harum (Shine On Brightly), Mott the Hoople (All the Young Dudes) and David Bowie ( Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars). Over this period, he produced hundreds of book covers, LP and CD covers, advertisements, portraits and drawings. Underwood's connections with David Bowie started when they were in the same high school band together, George and the Dragons. It is Underwood, in fact, that damaged Bowie's left eye in a tussle over a girl! The offered painting measures 19 x 25 inches and presents with Underwood's embossed label on the reverse of the frame. Near Mint to Mint condition.
