Offered is a magnificent jumbo hand-tinted 1910 era original photograph of legendary boxing champion Jack Johnson. The massive 17 x 22 inch photo is one of the finest of Johnson, capturing him in his prime. Johnson became the first black world heavyweight boxing champion on December 26, 1908, with his victory over the reigning world champion, Canadian Tommy Burns, at the Sydney Stadium in Australia. His subsequent title defense in 1910 against retired champion James J. Jeffries was dubbed the "fight of the century." Johnson is considered the first civil rights hero of the 20th Century, not only for his exploits in the ring but also for his battle for equality in his personal life. The incredible photograph is presented in a beautiful period frame with a brass plate reading "Jack Johnson". The photographer has written "Bryant N.Y." in the lower right of the image. Stunning Near Mint condition.
